Professionals share the thing that helped them land a raise

Professionals share the thing that helped them land a raiseProfessionals share the thing that helped them land a raiseYour salary its one of the most difficult conversations to have - especially for women - but one that holds the most value in your career. Literally. It isnt only the mere act of asking for more zeros on your paycheck, but articulating your worth and having the confidence to stand by your reasoning. Though the process surrounding reviews and finances varies by industry and company, therbeibeie are various ways to reap the yes youre looking for - and have earned. How do you walk in and out of the meeting confident and happy? The advice on financial increases is plenty, but often the source of wisdom to tap into is from those who have the been-there, earned-that money. Here are the stories of successful professionals who managed to get a raise, and then someResearch, research, researchWhen it came time for the annual performance evaluation at her company, senior graph ic designer Lena-Marie Sabin knew she had homework to complete before sitting down with her employer. With a salary of $50,000 at the time in New York City, she welches convinced it welches far below the market rate of not only the island, but the nation. And, with the amount of output she was delivering, she also knew she deserved far more than she was bringing home. She was right - on both accounts. So she did her research thoroughlyand came prepared to state her case with numbers, examples, and more. Its the advice shed give anyone nervous about the conversation Find where you match up in the industry and present a strong, thought-out, fact based argument, she shared. Sabin proved successful in her quest, earning a 40 percent increase and putting her to an annual income of $70,000.Let your merit standaloneBefore becoming a freelance political strategist and communications consultant, Catherine* was working in-house for a communications firm for several years, sans salary increase . At $70K AUD, she felt she hit a mid-level plateau for the industry, and wanted to make the best case she could for a raise. But getting there was tricky, since though in theory, her company believed in regular reviews and performance feedback, they never happened. She tried to schedule meetings and theyd inevitably get cancelled in a hyper-busy environment. So, she tried a more informal approach to see if she could make moves, by casually ducking into her CEOs office for a chat. With this plan in mind, she turned to the advice of a trusted ratgeber who gave her surprising advice let merit standalone. While Catherine was prepared to come with facts and figures to convince her employer to give her a raise, her mentor advised a different approach Do you think your male colleagues are going into your bosss office with that kind of maths? Do you really think they talk about historic Australian inflation rates? No. If you are excellent at your job and your work speaks for itself then tha ts all you need to say. If they want to keep you or want to work out another form of compensation package, then they will.Instead of arriving with a powerpoint, Catherine attended the meeting prepared to illustrate her own worth with confidence.I began the conversation talking about my work generally and asking if there was any feedback for me or ways to improve, and then I broached the raise conversation by saying that based on the conversation I would like a raise to reflect the quality of work I had been putting out, she explained. After some discussion, she was given a $10K increase, and as her mentor put it - it was as simple as that.Convince your company why they need youDue to some shifts in the company, cost accounting manager Brett Mueller was wearing the hats of several gigs other than his own. His boss at the time recognized the need to restructure, and eventually, they were able to secure a new headcount under Mueller. He was in charge of the hiring process, including w riting the job description, and made sure to include many responsibilities he was originally hired to do.This, of course, led to questions about what he would do when they found their new employee, resulting in a new title- and with his bargaining, a pay increase from $123K to $135K. Howd he do it? Mueller said it wasnt about showing his value but convincing her manager he was the best option for the job at hand, even with a compensation increase. What would they do if you left? Are there a gaggle of new college grads out there who could learn your role pretty quickly, or would it take a months-long search and tens of thousands of dollars in headhunter fees to find a suitable replacement? Would they lose clients without you? Is your boss/team the type that is happy to roll up their sleeves and cover your responsibilities, or is the thought of working nights/weekends terrifying to them? Quantify these factors as much as possible, he continues. That way youll have an idea how much you can ask for and still remain their best alternative.

Tips for Asking for a Letter of Recommendation

Tips for Asking for a Letter of RecommendationTips for Asking for a Letter of RecommendationIf youre interviewing for a new job, you should expect to haveyour references checkedprior to getting an offer. Having good references can make or break the possibility of a job offer, so review these tips for asking for a letter of recommendation. In addition, check out these sample reference lettersso you know what kind of information you need to send to the person wholl be providing your recommendation. Be koranvers to choose the right people to ask forletters of recommendation, and ask them far enough in advance so that youre not rushing them. If you plan ahead and compile alist of referencesso that you can get your recommendation letters now, it will ensure youre prepared when aprospective employer requestsa reference letter, or two. Who to Ask for References On average, employers checkthree referencesfor each candidate. However, you cant have too many people in your corner, and it ca n be helpful to have a selection of people vouch for you who are knowledgeable about different aspects of your abilities. That way you can choose the best references for each type of company youre applying to. Select People Who Will Give You a Strong EndorsementIts important to know your references well. You need to select responsive people who can confirm where you worked, your title, your reason for leaving, detailsregarding your strengths, and why you would be a good employee. Its also important to have a good idea of what references are going to say about your background and your performance. Make sure that any information provided by your references corroborates what you have written in your resume and talked about in your interviews. Inconsistent information can jeopardize your chances at a job offer, or evencause it to be withdrawn. References Dont Have to Be from EmployersIts perfectly acceptable to use references other than past employers. Business acquaintances, professors or academic advisors, customers, and vendors can all serve as references. In addition, if you volunteer, you can use leaders or other members of the organization aspersonal references. Get Recommendations in WritingWhenever you leave a position you should askfor a letter of recommendationfrom your manager, especially if you had a good working relationship. Its a good idea to ask right away because as time passes and people move on, its easy to lose track of previous employers and the memory of exactly how vital you were to an organization during your tenure may fade. If you have letters in-hand in advance, youll have written documentation of your credentials readily available to give to prospective employers. But what about those supervisors you didnt ask for a letter of recommendation when you moved on? Its perfectly acceptable to contact them now to ask for a letter to include in your personal files. How to Ask for a Letter of Recommendation Dont simply ask, Could you writea letter of referencefor me? Just about anyone can write a letter. Its better to ask, Do you feel you know my work well enough to write me a good recommendation letter? or Do you feel you could give me agood reference? That way, your reference writer has an easy out if they are not comfortable writing a letter. Conversely, youll be assured that those that say yes will be enthusiastic about your performance and will write apositive letter. Always offer to provide your updated resume including information regarding your skills and experiences, so the reference writer has current information to work with. Additional Letter of Recommendation Tips If your recommendation writer asks you to provide a sample of the kind of reference letter you need, here are somerecommendation letter samplesyou can provide. In addition to references, you may be asked to provide contact information for your present supervisor. Most prospective employers realize that you may not have shared the details of y our job search with your current employer, and will ask your permission beforecontacting your supervisorto avoid jeopardizing your current position. Dont forget to thank your reference writers with a thank you musiknote. People like to feel appreciated and when they know theyve been a big help to you, they may be more likely to help you in the future. An email thank you note is fine, but a hand-written thank you note may appear to be more thoughtful and might make a bigger impression.

Benefits of Volunteering With Animals

Benefits of Volunteering With AnimalsBenefits of Volunteering With AnimalsThere are many groups that seek volunteers to assist their staff members, and volunteering can be very rewarding on many levels. Individuals specifically interested in animal careers can benefit greatly from volunteering their time to shelters, rescues, zoos, and many other animal-related organizations. Here are eight of the best reasons to become a volunteer Gain Insight Into a Field of Interest Volunteering allows you to learn about a career path without the added pressure you would feel as a new employee. You also may have more chances to learn about more varied aspects of the career while volunteering, instead of being relegated to typical new employee grunt work as is so often the case with new hires. Develop Valuable Practical Skills Volunteer activities help you to gain hands-on experience and learn new skills. A volunteering standort is a great way to develop a skill set that you need for a pote ntial career change or promotion. For instance, if you wanted to work in fundraising you might consider assisting with such activities for an animal charity or a zoo development program. If you need to learn basic veterinary and first aid skills you might consider volunteering with a vet clinic or a wildlife rescue group. Position Yourself to Obtain a Paying Job in the Future Getting your foot in the door with a volunteer position can open the door to many job opportunities. You will develop a good reputation by volunteering and potentially even be offered jobs that have notlage yet been advertised to the public. Some rescue groups and charities do have paid staff positions that open up from time to time, or they might have leads on paying jobs with other organizations that are looking for someone with your skill set. Build a Network of Professional Contacts Volunteer work can be an excellent way to network and interact with professionals in a field that interests you. You c an utilize this network for getting job references, finding out about new potential job openings, writing letters of recommendation (particularly important for veterinary students), and introducing you to an ever-widening group of animal professionals. Make New Friends Volunteering in an animal related industry means you have the chance to make friends of both the human and animal varieties. You will have the chance to work alongside other animal lovers who share similar interests and are united with you in the pursuit of a common cause. You will meet people outside of your usual circle that you might never have had the chance to interact with otherwise. There are many social benefits related to volunteer work. Strengthen the Community Volunteer organizations connect people and build positive relationships within the community. These groups are good for society and raise awareness of important causes. Improve Your Resume The additional experience and skills you gain as a volunteer can certainly be included on your resume, and in fact, they can be a big plus. It is unfortunate that many people believe that only paying positions can be included on a resume- this is absolutely not the case at all. Be sure you are including all positions on your resume, even those that are unpaid if they are relevant in any way to the career you are seeking. You may not be gaining financial compensation for your volunteer work, but you are gaining skills and experience that should be highlighted. Have Fun While Doing Something Good Volunteering allows you to make a difference while surrounding yourself with others who are enthusiastic about the cause. You have the opportunity to do something that interests you and that you find fulfilling. Volunteering should really be a lot of fun. If it isnt fun, you havent found the right volunteer opportunity yet.

How to Get Your Boss to Promote You

How to Get Your Boss to Promote You According to a 2015 Randstad survey, a lack of career options is one of the top reasons why people leave their jobs, if notthe top reason. But a lack of advancement opportunities is not always the employers fault. In more cases than you might think, people fail to advance their careers because they lack clear visions, effective strategies, and beratership. People also fail to advance because they never step back to honestly assess their own strengths and how they can best contribute to an organization. So, what do the people who succeed in landing promotions do? Here are three key actions they take to advance even when the company seems, on the surface, to lack such opportunities1. They Are Very Clear About the Position or Role They Are Working Toward and Have a Great Track Record With the CompanyOf course, it wont always be the case that someone knows exactly wh at role they want. However, in most successful cases, people are able to pinpoint thefontof position they want in the company. More importantly, they know why they want to be in this role and feel confident they would succeed in it.While its great to have a clear vision and direction, its equally as important to make sure you are giving your current role your best effort, even if your ultimate goal is to advance to another position. Ive seen a lot of people get too focused on their future role, losing focus on their current role as a result. Wise leaders look at your character and your performance over a long period of time before making a decision about a promotion. If youre not performing at your peak in your current role, you wont be promoted to your goal role. For example, I recently spoke with a CEO who said he welches unlikely to hire or promote someone who said a lack of motivation was the cause for their poor performance in a prior role. The CEO said that, in his experience, it was often obvious that the person lacked integrity if they took on a position to which they couldnt contribute. He also said that, many times, people who use the motivation excuse dont have a good work ethic. They are too emotionally driven. Instead of always working hard, they only work hard when things are going well.2. They Are Appropriately Transparent With the Right People and Find the Mentorship and Support They NeedI met with a woman last year who had recently been promoted to project manager at a very reputable organization. She informed me that she was promoted to her management position earlier in her career than the company policy agreement stated was permissible. Nobody could believe she was able to pull this off. In fact, as she was trying, most people told her she was foolish to even attempt it.How was she able to accomplish this seemingly impossible feat? For starters, she was bold. She didnt hold back. During her first months at the company, she sought out someone at a nearby location who worked as a project manager and asked if she could take her out to lunch and learn more about the role. She decided that it was definitely the role she wanted to be in, and the project manager agreed to mentor her and help her create a strategy to work toward landing this role. The woman and her mentor connected in person or by phone every week for many months. The mentor happened to be very well respected at the organization and close with upper management. When a project manager position became available, the mentor gave this woman a stellar recommendation to upper management. After management pulled some strings, this woman was promoted even though she hadnt been at the company long enough.Find a specialist who understands the dynamics and skills it takes to accomplish your career goals. Invest in yourself and take a proactive approach. Youll be ten steps ahead of your competition if you do.3. They Understand How They Would Contribute to the Organization I f Promoted to Their Goal RoleBe honest with yourself about what you do best. Get feedback from others you respect. Look at the tangible results youve achieved in your career to understand how you can concretely contribute.I cannot stress this enough. Many people simply want to be promoted because it sounds good and pays more. They wait around passively for things to change, or they have an idea of why they could be promoted but dont put in the work to make it a reality.Heres an exception to that norm A woman Ive been coaching currently works for a hotel company in abverkauf and reservations she wants to be a revenue manager. In our conversations, I am helping her clearly articulate exactly the tasks she currently does and the skills she possess that would make her a dynamic revenue manager in the future. In addition to excelling in her current role, she is tracking quantifiable data regarding how much money she saves the company by analyzing quarterly and annual sales spreadsheets an d doing financial forecasting to cut on extraneous costs. In order to promote customer satisfaction and client retention, she is also ensuring the companys top clients who will book large events in 2018 are informed in advance of rising costs for service congruent with inflation. By taking these actions, she has already surpassed her predecessor in terms of money saved and earned for the company and shes only been at it a few months. This woman has the key ingredients she needs to land a promotion She understands how she could be of most help to her company she works hard at and excels in her current role she is durchschaubar about her intentions with her current boss, her regional manager, and the revenue manager at a different hotel location. As a result, she has found that not only are her managers supportive, but they are also giving her tips on what she can do to become a great revenue manager one dayTo top it off, she has only been at her company six months, and she just recei ved her first promotion last week.Scott Engler is the author ofThe Job Inner-ViewandLegends of the Recruiting and Career World.Read his latest,The Problem and the Solution,on his website.

Top Things to Consider When Joining the Marines

Top Things to Consider When Joining the MarinesTop Things to Consider When Joining the MarinesThe U.S. Marine korporation is known as one of the most formidable military forces in the world, and its reputation is well-earned. From its famously rigorous boot camp to the fearless attitude of its troops, the Marine korporation is an appealing career for those who want to make a difference. Its important to examine all the Corps has to offer before deciding to enlist and to be aware that a tour of duty in the Marines is definitely not for everyone. It doesnt matter what your Marine Corps job is If youre a Marine, youre going to deploy, sooner or later. The Marines are proud of the fact that theyre all considered riflemen first, and whatever their military occupational specialty (MOS) or job is second. Brief History of the Marines Officially established in 1775 by the Continental Congress, the Marines were created to act as a landing force for the U.S. Navy. They were established as a separate branch of the U.S. military in 1798. Marines specialize in amphibious operations, and are Marine Corpsunits are often attached to ships deployed at sea. Navy aircraft carriers typically deploy with a Marine flying squadron alongside Navy squadrons. In the modern era, the Marines expanded ground-combat operations. In general, theyre a more nimble, lighter force in comparison to other branches, with the goal of being able to deploy quickly. The branches of the U.S. military share many similarities, but each has its own unique culture. And each branch has different incentives, opportunities for assignments and jobs, deployment rates, and promotion rates. Here are a few of the factors in the Marine Corps you may want to consider before deciding to enlist. Recruiting Environment With the exception of the Coast Guard, the Marine Corps is the smallest military service and only needs to enlist about 38,000 new recruits per year (compared with the Armys average 80,000 yearly rec ruiting goal). The Marines are small because the Corps needs to be nimble in order to rapidly deploy. Marines Basic Training Marine Corps boot camp is legendary for being the most difficult and grueling basic training of all the branches of the U.S. military at 13 weeks, it is the longest. There are two places where male Marine recruits train Parris Island, South Carolina and the recruit training depot at San Diego, California. And as one might imagine, given the competitive nature of the military, theres an intense rivalry between the east coast and west coast Marines. Female Marine recruits train at Parris Island separate from the men. Educational Opportunities for Marines Everyone who enlists in any branch of the U.S. military is eligible for G.I. Bill, which provides tuition and living allowance stipends for American veterans. The Marine Corps also has a college fund which adds money to monthly G.I. Bill entitlements. Job Opportunities for Marines The Marine Corps ha s more than 180 enlisted jobs, which as mentioned above, are referred to by their MOS number. Because the Marine Corps gets much of its non-combat betreuung from the Navy, the job ratio is heavily weighted toward combat jobs. Theres no real way to get a guaranteed job when enlisting in the Marines. The general expectation is that new recruits simply want to be a Marine, and then whatever job they pursue is a secondary concern.
